Is It Time To Take A New Look At Retirement?
Retirement started as a way of forcing people out of the workforce when they reached a certain age. It was literally a punishment for no longer being productive; and given that the lifespan was much shorter, planning for the years after you stopped working wasn’t exactly necessary.
The modern retirement is much different, and it’s a life milestone that we should celebrate! We can expect to live to 80, 90 and beyond! (Check out my eBook on Living To 100 And Beyond!) Many retirees are learning the hard way that not having someplace to go in the morning is not all it’s cracked up to be! The harsh reality is retirement can still feel like a punishment if you don’t have a plan!
To find true satisfaction at this stage of life, we need to stop thinking of retirement as the end of our working years, but to think of it as moving on or graduation to the next phase of our life. Retirement is really the graduation from NEEDING to work!
Retirement Is Not The End Of The Road, Just The Next Step!
We need to stop thinking of retirement as the end of our productive life. It’s much more than the last day at the office, it’s the time for doing things we never had the time for before. For some this is traveling, for others, it may mean volunteering your time. Maybe you want to start your own business. And if you’ve planned well, you should have some financial independence; you don’t have to work for the paycheck, you want to work for the satisfaction!
It’s Time To Ask The Question We’ve Been Asked Before!
All most every child has been asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” But, it’s time to ask ourselves that question again! As a matter of fact, you should never stop asking that question! Retiring does not mean it’s too late to change your mind on what you want to do; it means you now have the financial independence and time to find your true answer!
To Work Or Not To Work? That Is The Question!
You now need to decide what would be fulfilling to you. Work doesn’t have to mean you have to report to someone who tells you what to do; it may mean you are the boss! It’s important that at this stage you don’t withdraw from life, instead, you stay productive doing what you want to do!
You may want to continue to work, but on a part-time basis or even becoming a consultant. Perhaps you want to become an entrepreneur and start a new business. Perhaps, because you no longer need that steady paycheck, you invest your time in volunteering for a cause you are passionate about. Or maybe you want to spend more time with your grandchildren. Or maybe there is a new hobby you want to take up!
What We Should Learn
Whatever retirement means to you, you need to make sure you’re still showing up for life! You want to maintain your skills and talents while you continue pursuing your passions! If you don’t continue to find a reason to get out of bed in the morning, you will eventually stop getting out of bed in the morning!
Thinking of retirement as your entry into a new chapter of life will help ensure you enjoy many fulfilling years to come!
For me, this has meant learning new skills that help me pursue things I always enjoyed but never had time for! It means I continue to improve my writing and running! I still have reasons to get out of bed in the morning, as a matter of fact, I’m getting up even earlier than when I was working!
